Manaus
Other than the harbor, which I might have imagined, but never expected in scope, Manaus was not at all what I expected. It was far larger, had more beautiful old buildings, and was more vibrant than I had ever foreseen. Hotel Krystal, a place off what it might have once been, was located directly across from the city library. The outside as lovely as the inside was stunning. |
I suppose this is the city seal. Two rivers joining and the star being Manaus |
Most streets in this neighborhood looked like this, more or less crowded |
Going down the street, away from the harbor, the hotel is located on, past many lovely old houses (this one dated 1905) takes one to a large square where one finds the Theater of the Amazon. Every visitor, so it seems, is asked if they had gone to see it. It's a source of great pride to the locals. |
So, here it is. The pride of Manaus and a national treasure: The Teatro Amazonas. In fact, the whole square around it was a major attraction. |
